Chandigarh: As part of its campaign against corruption in the state, the Punjab Vigilance Bureau on Thursday arrested Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Nirdosh Kaur of Ludhiana Women Cell and her reader Beant Singh while trying to accept a bribe of Rs 30,000.
Giving information in this regard, an official spokesperson of the State Vigilance Bureau said that both the policemen have been arrested on the basis of a complaint lodged by Preetpal Kumar, resident of village Ghudda in Bathinda district.
He further said that the complainant approached the Vigilance Bureau and recorded his statement that five years ago his nephew Ashwani Kumar was married to a girl from Ludhiana city. After marriage, their relationship deteriorated and his wife lodged a complaint against him in Ludhiana Mahila Cell.
The complainant further alleged that during the investigation process of this complaint, the above accused Reader Beant Singh introduced him to the woman ACP. He said that after this meeting, the reader told the complainant that if he wanted to get the complaint filed against Ashwani Kumar quashed, he would have to pay a bribe of Rs 1 lakh, but on repeated requests of the complainant, the reader agreed to do the job for Rs 60,000.
The complainant further alleged that on 29.07.2024, the said Reader took Rs. 30,000 as the first installment in the presence of the ACP and asked to pay the remaining amount on 01.08.2024. The complainant made a recording of the bribe of Rs. 30,000 demanded and accepted by the Reader and the ACP, which was submitted to the Vigilance Bureau as evidence.
The spokesperson said that after preliminary investigation of this complaint, FIR No. 28 was registered on 1.08.2024 at Vigilance Bureau Police Station, Ludhiana Range against both the accused under Section 7 of Prevention of Corruption Act and Section 61(2) of BNS Act. Subsequently, a trap was laid by the Vigilance Bureau team in which both the accused were arrested in the presence of two official witnesses while trying to take the second installment of Rs 30,000 from the complainant. He said that further investigation in this case is underway and the accused will be produced before the competent court tomorrow.
