Chandigarh: Professor Renu Wig, Vice Chancellor, Punjab University was conferred the honorary title of Colonel in NCC at a piping ceremony held at NCC Group Chandigarh today. Major General Manjit Singh Mokha, Additional Director General (ADG), National Cadet Corps (NCC), Directorate of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh, Brigadier Harpreet Singh, Group Commander, NCC; Shri Rupinderjit Singh Brar, Director Higher Education, Chandigarh, faculty and NCC cadets from various colleges and schools were present on the occasion. Professor Wig was honored with a folder and memento at the grand ceremony.
The Government of India has granted the honorary rank of colonel in the National Cadet Corps to vice chancellors (VCs) of 19 Indian universities. These 19 vice chancellors will serve as colonel commandants of their respective universities. Their honorary rank will remain valid as long as they hold the post. Honorary military ranks are sometimes conferred on civilians for their outstanding performance in a specific field or their contribution to nation building.
The Vice Chancellor expressed his gratitude on being honoured and said that this prestigious title is not merely a personal accolade but a testimony to the shared commitment and hard work of Panjab University and the National Cadet Corps in upholding the core principles of ‘Unity and Discipline’.
Major General Mokha, ADG NCC also addressed on the occasion and urged the cadets to give their best to excel in all spheres of NCC activities. He congratulated the Vice Chancellor for the honorary rank and said that the appointment of Colonel Commandant of NCC would bring her in close contact with NCC units, thereby establishing better relations with the officers and cadets of the educational institutions under the jurisdiction.
