Interesting story of Sankashti Chaturthi

According to the legend, Goddess Parvati created Lord Ganesha from the dirt of her body and one day in his childhood she left him sitting at the door and went to take a bath. While leaving, Goddess Parvati told Lord Ganesha not to let anyone in but during this time Lord Shiva reached there. Since Goddess Parvati had ordered Ganesha not to let anyone in, Ganesha did not let Lord Shiva in and stopped him at the door. Shiva became very angry at this and he beheaded Ganesha.

When Mother Parvati came to know about this after taking a bath, she felt very sad. After which, to remove the sorrow of Mother Parvati, Lord Shiva brought the head of a newborn elephant and put it on Ganesh ji’s body. It is said that at that time Ganesh ji’s severed head fell on the moon. It is believed that the tradition of offering water to the moon started due to this reason. Offering water to the moon on the day of Sankashti Chaturthi is also considered auspicious.
