The Nobel Prize 2024 in Physiology or Medicine will be announced today. Along with this, awards will also be announced in the fields of science, economics, literature and peace between 7-14 October. The prize money is 1.1 million US dollars. A Nobel Prize can be awarded to a maximum of three winners who share the prize money.
Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel initiated the Nobel Prizes. In his last testament, he specifically designated the institutions that were responsible for the prizes he wanted to establish. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awards the Nobel Prizes in Physics and Chemistry. Similarly, the Karolinska Institutet awards the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine and the Swedish Academy awards the Nobel Prize in Literature.
A committee of five people elected by Norway’s parliament (Storting) decides the Nobel Peace Prize winner. The first Nobel Prizes were awarded in 1901, but the Nobel in economics, known as the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences, was first awarded in 1969. Since 1901, the Nobel Prizes have been awarded during Nobel Week.
It culminates with the Nobel Prize ceremony on December 10 at the Stockholm Concert Hall in Sweden and the Oslo City Hall in Norway, marking the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death. The Nobel Prizes in Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, and Literature are awarded in Stockholm, Sweden, while the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded in Oslo, Norway.
Between 1901 and 2023, the Nobel Prizes and the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel have been awarded 621 times to 1,000 people and organizations. According to the statutes of the Nobel Foundation, each winner will be awarded a gold medal. The Nobel Prize medal bears an image of Alfred Nobel on the obverse. The image on the reverse varies depending on the institution awarding the prize.
The Literature Diploma is written on parchment, i.e. specially treated leather, using the same techniques as medieval book illustrators. Diplomas awarded to other prize winners are prepared on specially ordered handmade paper.
