Story of Indira Ekadashi
King Indrasen of Mahishmatipur was a very religious king. He was also a great devotee of Lord Vishnu. One day Narad Muni came to his court. The king served him happily and then asked the reason for his visit. Devrishi Narad told that, ‘I went to Yamlok where I saw your father.’ Narad ji further told that, due to the fault of breaking the fast, your father is suffering in Yamlok, so he has sent a message for you that you should observe the fast of Indira Ekadashi. So that he can attain heaven.
Then the king asked how this fast can be observed? Narad Muni told him that Ekadashi fast is observed for ancestors on the Ekadashi of Ashwin month. On this day, worship should be done with a true heart for the peace of the soul of ancestors. Food should be offered to ancestors and cows. Then food should be offered to brothers, relatives, grandsons, sons, and food should be eaten while observing silence. This gives peace to your ancestors. After this, on Ashwin Krishna Ekadashi, Indrasen observed Ekadashi fast according to the method told, due to which his father’s soul got peace and after death he attained salvation.
