Congress Councilors Protest, Seek Funds for Chandigarh Municipal Corporation
Chandigarh, 7th March, 2025: In a unique protest, Congress councilors, led by Chandigarh Congress President HarMohinder Singh Lucky, gathered outside the Municipal Corporation with bowls in hand, seeking funds from the central government and administration.
Lucky criticized the Modi government and the Chandigarh administration, stating that the municipal corporation’s financial situation had deteriorated to the point where they were forced to beg for funds. Despite having a “triple engine” government, with the BJP controlling the center, administration, and mayor’s office, the municipal corporation was struggling.
Lucky alleged that the central government had failed to provide the corporation’s share of revenue, amounting to ₹1,704 crore, as per the Fourth Delhi Finance Commission’s formula. Additionally, the administration had not provided any dedicated funds, which had been a regular annual allocation.
The protest highlighted the corporation’s dire financial situation, with employees’ salaries unpaid, potholes unfilled, and development work stalled due to non-payment to contractors.
Prominent Congress leaders, including Senior Deputy Mayor Jasbir Singh Banti, Deputy Mayor Taruna Mehta, and councilors Gurpreet Singh Gabbi, Darshana Rani, and Nirmala Devi, participated in the protest.
The Congress party has vowed to continue raising its voice for the city’s betterment and development, and for the rights of employees and citizens. The funds collected during the protest were handed over to the mayor.
