Mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla Demands Water Connections for Residents Outside Lal Dora
Chandigarh Mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla has urged the Chandigarh Administration to provide water connections to residents living outside the Lal Dora (peripheral area) of 24 villages. The Mayor will table a proposal in the upcoming General House meeting on February 17.
Currently, residents in these areas rely on expensive water tankers for their daily needs, despite having electricity connections. The Mayor emphasized that access to water is a fundamental right and urged the Administration to make a decision on this matter promptly.
To facilitate this, the Mayor suggested amending the Water Bylaws to enable legal water connections in these villages. This move is expected to benefit around one lakh people.
The Mayor also appealed to the Administration to regularize structures outside the Lal Dora and address the long-pending demand of the villagers. This initiative is expected to provide relief to the residents and also boost the Municipal Corporation’s revenue.
In a pointed remark, the Mayor noted that the Congress party and its senior leaders have suddenly become active on this issue, which has been pending for years. She questioned why the Congress party did not raise this issue during their previous tenure, when their alliance partner AAP had the Mayor’s post.
