Johnson won the FA Cup with Manchester City in 2011 and the Premier League the following season. He was signed by his hometown club Sunderland for £10 million in 2012. He played at various levels for England, earning 12 caps at senior level.

In 2016, Johnson was convicted of sexual activity with a 15-year-old girl and sentenced to six years in prison. He was released from prison in 2019 after serving half of his sentence. He was sacked by Sunderland after his conviction and has not played professional football since.

Johnson was a talented winger with a good dribbling ability and a strong left foot. He was also a good crosser of the ball and was able to score goals from both open play and set pieces. However, his career was cut short by his criminal conviction.
