The most intense earthquake ever recorded in Assam occurred on 15 August 1950. While India was celebrating its third anniversary of independence, a magnitude 8.6 earthquake struck the far northeastern state of Assam and its surrounding border areas. The tremors were so strong that rivers broke their embankments and landslides blocked Himalayan valleys. This destroyed cities, villages, roads, farms and tea gardens.

There are 7 plates inside the earth, which keep rotating continuously. The zone where these plates collide the most is called the fault line. Due to repeated collisions, the corners of the plates bend. When too much pressure builds up, the plates start breaking. The energy below finds a way to come out and after the disturbance, an earthquake occurs.

Earthquakes are measured on the Richter scale on the basis of 1 to 9. Earthquakes are measured from its center i.e. epicenter. The intensity of the earthquake is estimated from this scale.
